Confusion prevailed at the NIMHANS mortuary on Friday regarding the hand-over of the body of a 32-year-old who had been fatally wounded on Thursday.
Chunyamutthu alias Kamal, of Dayanandanagar slum in Jayanagar First Block and an aluminium fabrication worker by profession, was attacked by his friend Jaffer and his associates around 4 pm near Babulal Hotel in Dayanandanagar. He was later taken to NIMHANS hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to injuries around 11 pm on Thursday night.
Siddapura police registered a case of murder based on a complaint by his sister Rajiya Sultana, who had converted to Islam after marrying Tabaresh Pasha. The deceased, Chunyamuttu, had also converted to Islam and was staying with his sister.
On Friday, when the body was to be handed over to the family after the post-mortem examination at NIMHANS, Chunyamuttu’s mother and brothers laid claim to it and said they wanted to perform the final rites as per their rituals. His sister, Sultana, however, opposed this and demanded that the body be handed over to her. Police intervened to settle the matter amicably and finally handed over the body to his mother.
Police said Chunyamuttu was allegedly having an affair with a sister-in-law of his colleague Jaffer, the main accused in the case. The two had fought on Monday evening. On Thursday, Jaffer, along with a few friends, allegedly attacked Chunyamutthu with lethal weapons and fled the scene. Police have launched a manhunt to nab the accused.
