The Udupi police have arrested three people with criminal records in connection with an intra gang war which resulted in an open battle with cars on the streets of Udupi on the night of May 18.
Although a case was registered by the Udupi police on May 20 over the brawl, a video of the gang war went viral on social media on Saturday.
Police sources said the fight was recorded by witnesses and emerged in the public domain on Saturday. The fight was among gang members over a car rental issue, an Udupi police officer said.
One of the gangsters arrested by the Udupi police, Mohammed Ashiq, 24, has over 10 cases of violence, kidnapping and use of illegal arms registered against him. He was arrested in Bengaluru in April 2022 for kidnapping, robbing and sexually assaulting a businessman in Bengaluru on March 26, 2022. The police had shot and injured Ashik and his associate Mohammed Isaq, 23, after they reportedly resisted arrest in the case of the kidnap of the businessman.

The duo was later released on bail in April 2023. Isaq is suspected to be involved in the Udupi gang war case and has been named in the complaint registered by Udupi police on May 20.
The two others who have been arrested in the gang war case are Rakib and Saqlain, police sources said.
The police complaint in the gang war case pertains to the renting of a car for a test drive by a few youths who allegedly caused extensive damage to the car to the tune of Rs two lakh.
According to the complaint filed by Ashlin Lewis, 19, a second hand car dealer, a Maruti Swift Dzire car given to him by an acquaintance called Dhanush was taken by another acquaintance, Mohammed Fazil, between May 13 and May 17 to give it to Isaq and the others for a test drive.
The complaint has alleged that Isaq and the others tried to steal the car, damage it and caused a loss of Rs two lakh while trying to avoid returning the car. It is alleged that a large cache of knives and swords were stored in the car for carrying out robberies.
An Udupi police officer said, “The fight broke out between the members of the same gang. The gang is involved in a lot of illegal activities like gambling, robbery, kidnapping and extortion.” The two warring gang factions were also linked to a kabaddi team in Udupi known as the Garuda gang on Whatsapp groups, the police indicated.
