A forest department employee and a boy were killed in separate attacks by wild animals in Karnataka Monday. In Madikeri, a forester was killed and a local resident sustained injuries in a wild elephant attack, while in Mysuru, a seven-year-old boy was mauled to death by a tiger, forest officials said.

The latest incidents come days after a retired forest officer was trampled to death during an operation to tranquilise an elephant in the state’s Alur. In the light of increasing instances of man-animal conflict, state Minister for Forest and Environment Eshwar Khandre will hold a meeting with senior officials of the forest department on Tuesday evening.

Authorities identified the deceased forest staffer as Girish, 35, who was part of the department’s Rapid Response Team. According to senior forest officials, Murugesh, a local resident, also sustained minor injuries in the attack.

“Fifteen members of the Rapid Response Team were rushed in to chase away a herd of elephants. The team burst crackers to drive the animals away, but one of the tuskers retaliated and Girish was attacked. He was taken to a hospital but succumbed to the injuries. He was with the forest department for the last eight years,” a senior forest official from Madikeri confirmed. Girish is survived by his sister.

In Mysuru’s Matukuppe forest range, Charan, 7, was allegedly mauled to death by a tiger when he was resting under a tree on Monday. His body was found partially devoured, officers said. Villagers blamed the forest department for the negligence and demanded compensation for the family.

On August 31, H H Venkatesh who was known for his expertise in firing tranquiliser darts during elephant-capturing operations was killed during one such mission when an elephant chased him. While trying to escape, the retired forester fell into a ditch and was trampled to death by the large mammal.
