‘Sath’ bags vice-present post on PU polls, celebrates Khalra

(Express photo) ‘Sath’, the student body that reveres the deceased human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, notched up its first election victory in the Panjab University student elections on the 28th anniversary of Khalra’s forced disappearance. Ranmeekjot Kaur of ‘Sath’, secured the vice president’s post on Wednesday.
Ranmeekjot garnered 3644 votes, surpassing the runner-up Anurag Vardhan, who received 2962 votes.
In the previous year, ‘Sath’ made its debut in PU council elections, earning 386 votes for their presidential candidate and 982 votes for the joint secretary candidate.
‘Sath’ emerged as a student group at PU in 2017, initially serving as a discussion group. It revived a focus on Sikh and Punjab politics, marking a significant shift on campus.

Jujhar Singh, a founder member of Sath, dedicated their first victory to Khalra, acknowledging the significance of winning on the anniversary of his disappearance. He emphasised their independent campaign and their dedication to safeguarding Punjab interests.

Jujhar Singh highlighted how ‘Sath’ has connected students from different regions and nations, promoting diversity in line with the teachings of Gurbani. Ankita Sindhu from Sath played a crucial role in leading the election campaign from Haryana during the previous council elections.
Jaswant Singh Khalra was taken by Punjab Police officials from his Amritsar home on September 6, 1995, and subsequently allegedly eliminated. Those responsible for his forced disappearance were later convicted.
