‘Z’ category security cover for ex-Naroda Patiya judge

Earlier, Kodnani had been given “Z” category security, which was after her retirement was scaled down to “Y” category.

The Gujarat government on Thursday upgraded to “Z” category the security cover of a former trial judge in the Naroda Patiya massacre case, a day after she told reporters that the state was not acting on her demand for increased protection.

In May, The Indian Express had reported that former judge Jyotsna Yagnik had received 22 threat letters and had been getting blank calls at her residence after she pronounced the landmark judgment in the Naroda Patiya riots case.

Following the report, the Gujarat government had formed a committee to review Yagnik’s security.

A senior officer of the home department confirmed on Thursday that Yagnik’s security had been upgraded from “Y” category to “Z” category.

As a designated trial judge in the case, Yagnik had convicted former minister Maya Kodnani, Bajrang Dal leader Babu Bajrangi and 30 others.

Earlier, Kodnani had been given “Z” category security, which was after her retirement was scaled down to “Y” category.
