‘Women only’ buses were first experimented in 1995, had limited success

Even that time, the buses plied on select routes and met with limited success — now barely remembered as those buses often ran empty with only a few women commuters.

The Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd (AJL) introduced “women only” buses on select routes last week following recommendation from Mayor Gautam Shah. Whatever may be the fate of the this initiative, the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) had already experimented with the idea way back in 1995 when the late Nandlal Wadhwa was its chairman.

Even that time, the buses plied on select routes and met with limited success — now barely remembered as those buses often ran empty with only a few women commuters.

To keep the legacy alive, AMTS has been running one bus in each of the six civic zones where half of the seats are reserved for women. “The buses were started some four months ago,” said Transport Manager Arjav Shah, who will present his budget on Tuesday before the Transport Committee. Asked if the more such buses could be added, he said :“If reserved buses would be added, it would be for the political bosses to decide.”
