A woman and her lover were tonsured and beaten up by their parents and relatives allegedly for eloping at Himmatnagar in Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district. The local police said the FIR had not been filed as the parents of both the victims refused to do so, citing societal issues since the woman was married.
According to local police, the woman and her lover, both in mid 20s, had eloped from Ambaji temple mela two days back. Police said that on Wednesday morning they were found tied together outside the woman’s in-laws’ house with their heads tonsured and faces blackened. “We were informed by a caller about the duo. We immediately rushed to the spot. After initial resistance from the relatives, we took them to the ‘B’ division police in Himmatnagar. Since they were beaten up badly the police told us to take them to civil hospital,” said Nilam Chaudhary, a counsellor working with 108 emergency service in Himmatnagar.
According to police sub-inspector D D Parmar, the victims had refused to lodge an FIR. He said that the statements of victims and their parents were recorded, but they refused to register a complaint. He said that it was a case of extra-marital affair and therefore, the parents were of the opinion that lodging a case will create problems for the woman. “If anyone comes to file a formal complaint, we will do it,” Parmar said.
