A man from Gujarat’s Amreli was arrested in the case of the murder of his alleged former lover, police constable Rinkal Hasmukh Vanzara, at her brother’s house.

The Local Crime Branch (LCB) of Gandhinagar Police on Wednesday arrested Mohan Nagji Parghi (33), who had gotten married to another woman almost a decade ago.

Investigators said that Vanzara and Parghi had allegedly met in secret at the former’s relatives’ home in Gandhinagar on Tuesday as she was alone. However, they allegedly quarreled over Parghi refusing to marry Vanzara. He then allegedly killed her by asphyxiation as she refused to relent.

The body of the 32-year-old Vanzara, who was posted at the police headquarters in Ahmedabad, was allegedly found by her brother and sister-in-law at their home in Sector 24 of Gandhinagar. The Sector-21 police rushed to the apartment and subsequently, after filing an Accidental Death (AD) report, the case was handed over to the Local Crime Branch (LCB) of Gandhinagar Police.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Gandhinagar LCB said that they had, through technical analysis, found that Vanzara had been in “constant touch” with Parghi, and thus began investigating his alleged role. They detained him in Amreli with the help of local police in that district. During questioning, Parghi allegedly confessed to the murder

According to the statement, Parghi allegedly revealed that he and Vanzara, were both from Gariadhar town of Bhavnagar and had also studied together in Amreli in 2011-12. Thereafter, Parghi had married another woman in 2015, but had allegedly remained in contact with Vanzara.

On September 29, when Vanzara allegedly told him that her brother and sister-in-law were visiting Bhavnagar and she would be alone at their home in Gandhinagar, Parghi allegedly travelled by a state transport bus and reached Ahmedabad, and from there, he allegedly reached Gandhinagar in another vehicle at night.

Then, Parghi allegedly told the police that Vanzara kept pressuring him to marry her and that he “suffocated” her with a piece of cloth. He had then returned to his home in Amreli.

The Sector-21 police booked Parghi for murder and the LCB handed him over to the police station for further investigation.
