A key witness in the Asaram rape case was allegedly attacked by unidentified assailants in Surat city on Monday night. This is the second such incident to have happened in the recent past, after the husband of a complainant in a case involving Asaram’s son Narayan Sai was assaulted by unknown persons few days ago.
According to the police, the 40-year-old witness in the case, Rakesh Patel, who has a video-shooting and photography business, was returning home in Paal locality, when two motorcycle-borne assailants intercepted his bike near his home.
Before, Rakesh could react, the pillion rider stabbed Rakesh in the back injuring him. Both the suspects fled after Rakesh shouted for help. Those passerby immediately took him to a nearby hospital where his condition was said to be out of danger, the police said.
Police sources said that Rakesh and his wife were followers of Asaram and he was also doing videography of each and every programme of him held in Jehangirpura ashram in Surat and at the Ahmedabad ashram. Later, Rakesh had become a witness in the rape case lodged by Surat city girl against Asaram. In a similar incident on February 28, an unidentified man stabbed husband of the complainant who had lodged a rape case against Narayan Sai and his aides.
Surat Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone-2 Shobha Bhutada said, “We are bit surprised with the attacks on the witness and the husband of the complainant. We will access all the witnesses in Narayan Sai case and take their opinion whether they need police protection or not. In both the incidents we suspect that the pressure is being created on the witness and the complainant.”
