Kamliwale Baba alias Govind Bharwad is in the news again, this time for blessing a police officer from Panchmahals. The man,who is wanted in Dahod for four offences of spreading superstition, unlawful assembly and other violations of the Medical Practioners Act,1963,is openly holding and attending sessions. The police, however, express helplessness on the grounds that Bharwad enjoys immense popularity among the tribals and tacit support from political leaders of the region.
Godhra-based Rationalist Humanist Society, which had filed the complaints against Bharwad, had itself come under fire recently when the local Vishwa Hindu Parishad members alleged that the society has been doing rubbish work. continued on page 2
With tacit support from the local sarpanchs and political leaders, who raise five to six lakh rupees per session,Bharwad is well protected. Moreover, after the offences were filed in Dahod district,he has not visited the district even once and continues to hold his sessions in Panchmahals, said Vipul Aggarwal,Superintendent of Police,Dahod.
In a video recording recently made available to the police in both the districts,Lunawada Deputy Superintendent of Police K B Katara was seen attending such a session. The Sunday Express could not contact Katara as he is on leave.
Aggarwal, who has seen the video, said that the officer in question is not from Dahod police and hence he cannot take action against him. Panchmahals Superintendent of Police J R Mothaliya was not available to comment on the issue.
It is not just the Rationalist Humanist Society that has filed a complaint against this man. There have been three minor offences registered against Bharwad under Section 188 of the IPC in Limkheda and Jhalod police stations. We are talking to the local police and hope to arrest him soon, said Aggarwal.
Recently,Mukund Sindhav,a retired Agriculture department official and the Godhra secretary of the Rationalist Humanist Society, had claimed to have exposed Bharwads secret ways of making money from his devotees.
Every Wednesday,he starts a fresh campaign from a new place. Devotees buy coconuts for nearly Rs 15 from a specific seller who is associated with the godman. These coconuts are resold after devotees offer them to Bharwad. Unsuspecting tribals suffering from polio or other diseases are covered with a blanket and made to walk with strong men supporting them.Villagers think its a miracle, said Sindhav, who himself had sent a girl suffering from polio to test Bharwads healing touch.
