According to sources, the accused got close to the girl, who was from another school, on the pretext of guiding her in her studies.
A 19-year-old student, who was murdered in a mango orchard along the railway tracks in Udvada town of Valsad, was raped before she was choked to death, the post-mortem report has confirmed, officials said on Saturday. Even as the accused was yet to be identified 48 hours after the incident, police filed a case of rape and murder.
Ten teams of the Valsad district police have fanned for clues and to find the teen’s mobile phone, which could lead to the accused as she had allegedly “gone missing” after speaking to an unidentified person as per her friend’s account to the police.
Following the confirmation of sexual assault in the post-mortem report, the Valsad district police have intensified the probe into the case, using technical intelligence as well as their sources. While the police have recovered a sim card from the site of the incident, her mobile phone is yet to be recovered.
A police official said that the victim’s phone could have a direct clue to the accused as according to her friend — who had informed her sister that she had gone ‘missing’ — the victim had accepted the call of “some other person” and was “thereafter unreachable”. The friend had also asked the victim’s sister to reach Udvada, where the teen attended tuition classes and was on her way back home when she was allegedly murdered.
An official said, “Technical surveillance is being undertaken to find clues. The teams have also gathered footage from the CCTV cameras in the vicinity to scan the movements of the time that she passed through the area. The call detail records of the victim’s phone will also give us a direction. We are also looking for the mobile phone to ascertain who she spoke to on her last call.”
