Liquor bottles worth Rs 15,000 were seized from an ambulance near National Highway-48 on the outskirts of Valsad town on Sunday, said police. The ambulance was returning from Maharashtra and headed to DN Mehta Hospital in Navsari.
Acting on a tip off, police were carrying out vehicle-checking on the outskirts of Valsad near NH-48 at Dharampur Chokdi, officials said.
When the ambulance was stopped, officials found 33 IMFL (Indian-made foreign liquor) bottles hidden in small cavities in the vehicle.
Police demanded a liquor permit, which the driver failed to submit. He was then arrested. Valsad town police inspector D D Parmar said, “The accused, Rukhsad Amalsadiwala, purchased liquor from Dahanu area in Maharashtra and hid it in several boxes in the vehicle. He was on his way to Navsari. Our team got information and caught him. The ambulance is in use at a hospital in Navsari. We are interrogating the accused to find out why he brought liquor from Maharashtra.”
A complaint in this connection was lodged by police constable Bhaveshbhai Andabhai with Valsad town police station on Sunday. Police registered offences under different sections of Prohibition Act. The accused told police that he went to drop a patient in Maharashtra and while returning he had purchased liquor bottles.
