Vadodara zoo hopes to get emu chicks by next month

The breeding season for emus,which began early November,has resulted in 33 eggs so far. Zoo officials say that the count of eggs is higher than the previous year’s 20 – three emu hatchling had survived.

Out of the 33 eggs this year,officials hope to have at least eight new members in the emu family in the Sayajibaug zoo this year.

In-charge Zoo Curator C B Patel says that the survival rate of the birds is low as a lot of the eggs would be infertile. “We hope that at least 50 % of the eggs will be fertile. Out of these too,some will be still born or the hatchling may not survive the first week. We are estimating about eight fit chicks from the current breeding season,” says Patel.
