Three policemen were injured as they tried to control mobs of two communities that clashed early on Sunday morning in the city. Later in the evening,police arrested six persons even as situation remained calm throughout day.
The trouble began when two men of minority community riding their respective motorbikes collided in Mogalwada locality of Vadi area and entered into a heated argument with each other.
A few youth of another community who were sitting at nearby shops mistook the argument and mobs of two communities came out on streets after a rumour spread that men of two communities were involved in the accident, Vadi Police Inspector Pradeep Arya said. The accident took place at around 11 pm on Saturday.
The two groups indulged into stone pelting and also allegedly damaged a few shops and vehicles.
While trying to control the rioters,Arya was hit by a stone on his left knee. A constable of Panigate police station and a State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) jawan,who was posted in the area,also sustained minor injuries in the melee.
Soon,Assistant Commissioner of Police (A division) J K Rao,officials of Detection of Crime Branch and police staff rushed the spot to bring the situation under control. Police had to lob 14 shells of tear-gas to disperse the rioters,Arya said. Finally,the police managed to force the mobs indoors at around 2 am.
While normalcy returned to the area as the day broke,Vadi police arrested six persons from the area late in the evening. They have been booked for rioting,police officials said. On the basis of SRPF constable Ramesh Vasava,Vadi police have registered a case of rioting against mobs and started investigation.
