Residents of several societies in Vadodara’s New Sama Road locality contracted water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea and jaundice, with ninety cases being detected as health officials of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) conducted surveys on Thursday.

The VMC was caught unaware as people in residential societies of Randhaldham,Laxminagar Society,Ganga Sagar,Ambika Nagar,Purshottam Nagar, among others complained of health problems after reportedly consuming contaminated water supplied by the VMC.

“I admitted my mother to a local private hospital where a doctor said she had jaundice symptoms,” said Harish Sharma,a resident of Srinagar Society in Sama.

“For the last 15 days we were receiving dirty water and complained to the VMC,which took samples only yesterday,” he added.

Jitendra Solanki, another resident, said,“Residents were getting contaminated water due to possible leak in the water supply line that could have caused gutter water to mix with drinking water,” he said.

The VMC,on Thursday, sent a medical team to survey the situation and distribute medicines.

VMC medical officer,Devesh Patel, said,“We have detected forty cases of diarrhoea and fifty cases of jaundice. Some leaks might have contaminated the water. We have rushed medical teams to the spot for giving tablets and ORS.”
