Amid heavy downpour in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the Ukai Dam in the Tapi district ended up receiving 1 lakh cusecs of water, officials said Saturday. Even as the heavy rainfall forecast in South Gujarat over the weekend has raised concerns, the water level in the dam stood at 312.34 feet on Saturday evening, 21 feet below the rule level, as per the official information.

“We are regularly receiving an inflow of over 1.02 lakh cusecs of water but there is nothing to worry about. The present water level in the dam is 312.34 feet against the rule level of 333 feet (around 21 feet less). Last year, around the same time, the water level in the dam was 326 feet with an inflow of 53,000 cusecs of water,” Ukai Dam Executive Engineer PG Vasava said. The rule level gives an indication of the storage space.

“At present, 38 per cent of the dam is filled with water measuring up to 28,773 million cubic meters. Ahead of the start of the monsoon season, the water level in the dam recorded earlier this year (May end) was 308 feet, while last year it was 312 feet,” he added. Till Friday afternoon, the inflow of water from the upper catchment area in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra was 21,004 cusecs, with the water level in the dam recorded at 310.55 feet. Friday evening onwards, the inflow increased to 41,310 cusecs and it reached 1,02,523 cusecs.

The dam authorities have been discharging 600 cusecs of water for the last couple of days.
There are 51 gauge stations lying in the upper catchment areas, people privy to the matter said, and 340 mm of rainfall was recorded in 35 gauge stations on Friday. As per the details received from the flood control department of Surat, Navsari, Dangs, Valsad, and Tapi, moderate rainfall has been received in different talukas of five districts.
