Two workers killed in fire at fertiliser plant in Mehsana

Two workers were killed while two others suffered burn injuries after a fire broke out at a fertiliser plant at a village in Mehsana district in the wee hours of Sunday, police said.

The blaze erupted at the private unit located near Sametra village around 3 am, a Mehsana rural police station official said. Two persons working at the plant during night shift were charred to death, according to the police. Two other workers who were injured were rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition for treatment, the police said.

Police Sub-Inspector Pooja Joshi, who is investigating the case, said that the exact cause of fire is not known yet.

A team of the fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot after being informed about the incident. They took about an hour to control the blaze, a Mehsana fire department official said.

The bodies of two workers were recovered after the fire was brought under control. There were six workers at the plant when the incident occurred, the fire department official added. The deceased have been identified as Manish Ravidas and Fulchand Mahadev, hailing from Bihar and Maharashtra, respectively, police said. The two injured workers have been identified as Avinash and Prince, said the police.

The Mehsana police have registered a case of Accidental Death (AD) in connection with the matter. The bodies were shifted to hospital for post-mortem examination and further probe is underway into the incident, they said.

Meanwhile, another fire incident was reported from a private facility in Bharuch.

A fire broke out at the Sanghvi Organics Pvt Ltd facility in GIDC Panoli, in Bharuch district, on Sunday, said the sources. According to the Bharuch district police, the fire broke out at a chemical factory and 26 labourers were workers at the time of the incident. However, they were rescued and no casualty was reported in the incident, said the police.
