Two infants of Surat children’s home die of ‘stomach-related problems’

Two infants of a children’s home at Vansda in Navsari district died at a hospital in Valsad.

Two infants of a children’s home at Vansda in Navsari district died at a hospital in Valsad. Though the doctors couldn’t say for certain the reason for their deaths,they said the babies,one three months old and the other four months old,were suffering from stomach-related problems. Meanwhile,four others from the same home are still admitted in a private hospital at Navsari. Their condition was reported to be normal.

The home had around 15 children,all below one year of age. These were children abandoned by their parents in Navsari,Dangs and Valsad districts. On Saturday,Shivam (3 months) and Vishwa (4 months) were brought to Kasturba hospital in Valsad for treatment in stomach-related issues. On Sunday,doctors declared both of them dead.

A post mortem exam has been carried out at Cottage hospital in Vansda,where their blood samples were taken for forensic tests in Surat. Doctors expect these tests to reveal the cause of death.

On hearing the news,the in-charge mamlatdar of Vansda rushed to inquire about the matter at the home. Police also turned up to record the statements of the staff. Four more children,experiencing stomachache were also rushed to Gohil hospital,Navsari. They include 2-month-old Krunal and 3-month-old Pruthvi.

Navsari Chief District Health officer Dr S G Jain also took stock of the admissions at Gohil hospital and the children home in Vansda and said,“We have taken blood samples of the four children admitted at Gohil hospital. Lab tests revealed that of the four,one is malnourished. We are carrying out more investigations.”
