A police sub-inspector (PSI) and two constables were injured as groups of two communities clashed while installing a Lord Ganesha idol in Panigate area here late on Monday night. However, the pandal organisers alleged that enough police deployment was not made despite their having expressed fear of such an incident before police.
The incident took place near Ekta Bhavan at around 11 pm on Monday when members of Panigate Yuvak Mandal (PYM) came under stone-pelting from a group of other community while they were unloading the Ganesha idol from a truck near a pandal. This incensed the members of PYM and they retaliated. Soon, mobs of two communities came out on the street and started throwing stones at each other. A group vandalised a few autorickshaws and trucks parked on the street.
The clashes started despite a few policemen accompanying the procession. However, additional personnel of Panigate police rushed to the spot to control the mobs. But they too came under stone pelting. PSI A J Achauhan and two constables were hit by stones and sustained minor injuries.
City police commissioner Satish Sharma and other officials drove to Ekata Bhavan to control the situation. After around half an hour, police managed to disperse the rioting mobs.
As we chased on group, the other would come out and when we chased the latter, the first would be on street. However, finally we managed to disperse them, Panigate police inspector A L Chaudhary said on Tuesday, adding one person was arrested in connection with the incident.
Though police denied they had resorted to lathicharge, eye witnesses claimed police had used force to bring the situation under control.
Though members of PYM alleged that police had not made enough security arrangement.
We had informed police in advance that such an incident was feared but they did not deploy enough policemen. On top of this,street-lights in the area were off, said a member of PYM.
However,Commissioner Satish Sharma said police were fully prepared for the festival. We have received additional two companies of SRPF. We have also given additional manpower from headquarters to various police stations. Officials have been asked to be on duty during evening during the festival, he said.
On the basis of a complaint by ASI Chauhan,Panigate have lodged a case of rioting against mobs.
