Tempos too go off the road,private buses resume service

over 3.6 lakh trucks operating in Gujarat have gone off road with tempo operators too joining the stir today on the sixth day of the nationwide truckers strike.

Akhil Gujarat Truck Transport Associations (AGTTA) Mukesh Dave is reported to have told a news agency that the strike continued as the government has not responded to any of their demands.

Meanwhile,private bus operators in Saurashtra,who had joined the truckers strike,resumed operations today. Over 5,000 private buses begun operations last night much to the relief of commuters, said Akhil Gujarat Pravasi Sanchalan Mandal president Jayendra Bawariya.

The Gujarat government had invoked Essential Services Maintenance Act against the striking truckers on Thursday night after the stir hit the work at cotton and groundnut wholesale markets in Saurashtra and milk-processing dairy cooperatives in north Gujarat. However,supply of essential commodities continued in all other parts of the state.

Essential commodities have been exempted from the strike and the trucks transporting vegetables,milk and medicines have been kept off from the strike,Dave said.
