When Bhaniben Vansh (60) got a tumour removed from her abdomen three years ago, little did she know that the operation she had undergone at Una Civil Hospital in Junagadh district was beginning of a worse medical complication since the then general surgeon had left surgical scissor inside her stomach.
The matter came to light on Wednesday when Vansh experienced unbearable pain. The general surgeon at the hospital,Dr D Solanki, referred the case to a local orthopedic Dr Ramesh Nimawat who ordered an X-ray. The report that came on Wednesday night showed an over four-inch-long surgical scissor inside the stomach.
Within the next 24 hours,Una Civil Hospital Medical Officer Dr N Y Bloch, whose brother Dr Y Y Bloch was the general surgeon at the hospital three years ago, rushed the patient to a private clinic in Ahmedabad where the scissor was removed by the latter.
Una Civil Hospital sources said the MO took a two-day casual leave on Thursday to accompany the family to Ahmedabad to correct the matter.
The scissor was removed by Dr Y Y Bloch in Ahmedabad on Thursday. She will be kept at the hospital for eight days, said Mohan Bachu,son-in-law of Vansh, who is a resident of Simasi village in Una taluka. We are too poor to fight any legal battle. The doctor in Ahmedabad has not charged anything for the operation, Bachu said.
She came with a complaint of severe pain in abdomen. There was an infection on the outer side too, said Dr Solanki. The X-ray was done at two different laboratories. Both confirmed the presence of scissor.
Solanki said the victims family, while giving the patients history, wrote that Vansh was last operated at the Unna hospital three years ago.
Solanki said when they were about to being preparations to operate upon her again, the MO said the patient was being referred to Ahmedabad as the operation could be risky.
Hospital authorities said that Dr Y Y Bloch, who resigned in 2010 to start private practice in Ahmedabad, was the only general surgeon at Una Civil Hospital between 2006 and 2010.
Despite repeated attempts,Dr N Y Bloch did not respond to calls.
However,a visit to Iqraa Hospital in Ahmedabad revealed that Dr Y Y Baloch had in fact come there on Thursday morning and operated upon the patient.
Hospital manager Imtiyaz Shaikh said Dr Baloch,a consulting surgeon sitting at Medi Surge Hospital in Ahmedabad, would come in the evening to check the patient.
While Dr Baloch was not available for comment,Dr Shadab Naumani, who assisted him in the surgery, said: We are not aware of what happened in Una,but here she was operated upon for correcting perforations in her intestine this morning.
While the patient had regained consciousness around 5 pm,she was complaining of pain in abdomen. He sister Viruben, who was attending on her,was at loss to understand why Bhaniben was brought for treatment all the way to Ahmedabad.
