A 20-year-old youth was admitted to the New Civil Hospital on Thursday night after he was allegedly beaten up by cops in the lockup of Katargam police station.

As per details, police had picked up one Ghanshyam Govind Makwana,a resident of Kubernagar society in Katargam and a diamond polisher by profession,on Tuesday night based on an application by a garba organiser,Raju Patel.

Patel had approached the police following an alleged altercation with Makwana at a garba venue near Makwana’s house on Monday night.

Makwana was later booked and arrested under CrPC section 151. He was released on Thursday afternoon on bail.

Ghanshyam reportedly told doctors attending to him at the hospital that policemen thrashed him with belt and wooden sticks in custody.

Ghanshyam’s brother said,“He was kept in police custody for more than 24 hours… We spoke to Raju Patel and he said he had withdrawn his application. But despite this he was beaten up by cops. Police also threatened my brother not to take up this issue with the higher-ups. We will make a representation to the police commissioner on Saturday afternoon.”

Katargam police inspector J T Sonara said Ghanshyam was interrogated and later freed after official procedures. “We don’t find any wrongdoing on the part of police… We will inquire into the allegations (of custodial torture) and the truth will come out,” he said.
