Surat police have lost their only tracker dog, which died two days ago. Prince was a Labrador and died of illness, said Surat police.

Sources within the department told Newsline that it would take at least a year to get another tracker dog and that would impede crime detection.

“The dog was earlier with the Vadodara Dog Squad and it was brought to Surat in 2007. He was not keeping well and was taken to Anand for treatment where he died on January 18. Prince was the only tracker dog available with the Surat Dog Squad. A tracker dog helps tracking criminals in theft, abduction and loot cases. Till we get another tracker dog,we will take help of the Rural Dog Squad,” said a dog squad officer.

Joint Commissioner of Police Vikas Sahay said,”We will get another dog when new dogs are allotted. We will apprise the officials concerned about the requirement of a tracker dog.”

Surat Dog Squad at present has two sniffer dogs and one narcotics dog. “These dogs played a crucial role when bombs were discovered in Surat. There were plans to bring additional dogs to the squad but nothing happened. Now,the only tracker dog is dead. Even if planning starts now,it would take more than a year to get a tracker dog,” said an officer.
