The functioning of police in Surat, the economic capital of Gujarat,is very important in view of its high crime rate. Last year, the city of 45 lakh people was targetted by terrorists who had planted explosives at several locations.
The City police has been revamped with the appointment of Deepak Swaroop as the new police commissioner. Two joint commissioners of police and and five officers of deputy commissioner level have also been appointed.
I want the same support Surtis gave to RMS Brar. We cannot succeed without it, said Swaroop.
He said the industrial city has a sizeable migrant population whose involvement in nefarious activities has made it a crime city. Besides, the city has also become a target of terrorist activities.
We have done some planning to handle the situation and will work on it systematically. The entire staff is new to me but we will definitely work hard so that the crime rate here comes down, said Swaroop.
He added,We will formulate a system so that people can meet me in my office without any hesitation and put forward their issues during my office hours.
Swaroop said crime detection and prevention can succeed only if the intelligence gathering apparatus is improved. Hence,it will be given more importance. We have demanded more staff from our superiors as there is a crunch over here, he said.
Earlier, the crime branch in Surat was overseen by an inspector. The post has now been upgraded to the deputy commissioner level.
The newly appointed DCP of crime branch,Subhash Trivedi, said,We will first give preference to security in terms of terrorism, underworld activities, cyber crime and hard crimes.
He said certain changes will be made in the crime branch and it has been decided to have one additional post of inspector.
He also said latest technology will be made available to the crime branch officers to enable them to detect crime.
The motive of this exercise is to make sure that the people of Surat feel themselves safer, said Trivedi.
