The members of the Surat District Bar Association (SDBA) passed a resolution stating the lawyers are “uninterested” in shifting to the new proposed site of the Surat court complex at Jiav Budhiya village located on the outskirts of the city.

The Chief Justice of Gujarat, Sunita Agrawal, visited Surat Saturday and met the registered lawyers of Surat District Bar Association and Surat City Advocate Association in the existing court complex.

The Chief Justice Agrawal told the SDBA members to pass a resolution in its general board meeting and later submit their report in case they are not in favour of moving to the new site.

Acting on the instructions of the Chief Justice, the SDBA Tuesday called a meeting and the lawyers unanimously decided against shifting.

Those present in the meeting were SDBA President Uday Patel, Vice President Abhishek Shah, Secretary Ashwin Patel, and Treasurer Anupam Patel.

The resolution also stated pollution problems and the area’s proximity to the industries as reasons for not relocating. The site also falls under hazardous and buffer zones.

In the backdrop of the Chief Justice rejecting the lawyers’ proposal of a new court complex at Bhimpore, some of the SDBA members suggested identifying some suitable government land in the city and making a fresh demand.

While stating that a copy of the resolution will be sent to the Chief Justice, SDBA President Uday Patel told The Indian Express that the lawyers are happy with the existing court complex on the Tapi River bank “instead of going to nearby Koyli creek at Jiav Budhiya”.
