The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday claimed major public opinion in its favour on the need to bring back black money stashed in foreign banks abroad.

The referendum was mooted by Chief Minister Narendra Modi after the party’s Gandhinagar candidate L K Advani demanded the retrieval of black money stored in Swiss banks. The exercise was carried out by the BJP only in Gujarat and the party intends to conduct it across the country.

On being asked why the party conducted the referendum only in Gujarat and not across India if the issue concerned the entire country,Gujarat Lok Sabha election in-charge Kaushik Patel said it was Modi’s idea to hold the referendum. “Similar exercise will be conducted later,” Patel said of the other states.

He said people stood in queues to cast their vote during the referendum that went on for two days.

“This goes to show that a majority of people are going to vote for our party in the forthcoming election,” the two leaders said.

They said the counting results from six parliamentary constituencies were yet to come out.

Skipping queries on whether any negative comments were found, they said comments like the “retrieved black money will make India an economic superpower” were also found on the ballots. The counting at Amreli,Bhavnagar,Anand,Dahod,Surat and Navsari was still going on,they said, adding, that the counting was being done under the guidance of BJP legal cell convener J J Patel.

In central Gujarat, more than 80 per cent votes in Vadodara,Anand,Kheda and Dahod were cast in favour of the party’s demand to bring back black money.

The party had printed 30 lakh ballot papers and has promised to use the money to fund infrastructure projects and utilise it for the uplift of farmers and the poor,if voted to power.

Officials of the level of retired judge, besides prominent lawyers and citizens, were present during the counting, said BJP leaders.
