Nearly four months after sending a letter to former Union home minister that drew no response, former Gujarat DGP R B Sreekumar has now written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh urging him to look into the issue of appointing a regular DGP in the state in view of the Assembly polls due later this year.
The state police is currently headed by Chitranjan Singh,an additional DGP-rank officer who has been in-charge DGP since September 2010 when S S Khandwawala retired as the state police chief.
The seniormost police officer in the state is Kuldip Sharma, who is currently on deputation at the Bureau of Police Research and Development in Delhi and is due to retire in December. V K Gupta, who is next in the seniority list,is a special director in CBI and is also due to retire in December.
Sharma has been embroiled in a legal battle with the Narendra Modi government and has blamed CM for downgrading his annual confidential report.
