The state government will include medal winners of Khel Mahakumbh events while giving jobs under the sports quota. This was stated by Sports,Youth and Cultural Activities Minister Ramanlal Vora in the Assembly Monday.
Vora informed the House that 17.71 lakh students had participated in Khel Mahakumbh in 2011-12 and Rs 54.18 crore was spent on holding competitions in 55 sporting disciplines.
Replying to a question by MLA Chhatrasinh Mori (Jambusar),the Minister said the government would launch a pilot project to set up sports complexes in talukas in near future. The pilot project would cost around Rs 4 crore. In the beginning, the government wanted to spend Rs 40 lakh in 10 talukas, he said.
In reply to a question related to Naswadi taluka of Vadodara district, the Minister said there was no sports complex there at present but the government was going to set up one at a cost of Rs 5 lakh. He said one sport complex had already come up at Rajpipla in Narmada district.
In reply to a question by Umargam MLA Ramanlal Patkar,Vora said there was no plan to develop Nargol village of Umargam taluka as a tourist destination.
When Patkar pointed out that the village has a sizeable number of Parsis,Vora said that plans would be worked out to develop beach resorts at two places in the area.
Congress demands white paper on poor coming to Gujarat
The Opposition Congress Monday demanded a white paper on the number of poor who have come to Gujarat from other places. The demand came in the wake of a statement by Chief Minister Narendra Modi recently made in New Delhi, according to which influx of the poor from other places caused problem of poverty in Gujarat.
To highlight the partys objection to the statement,Congress Legislature Party leader Shankersinh Vaghela led a rally from the Assembly building to the Gandhi statue there on Monday afternoon and offered prayers seeking good sense for Modi.
The BJP government should stop spreading falsehoods and take inspiration from the truth, Vaghela said later.
He said that instead of spending large sums on organising Garib Kalyan Melas, the government should utilise the money for providing basic facilities to people.
