Snow leopards ‘indicator species’: Expert

According to conservationist Keshav Varma, the snow leopard is an "indicator species".

Experts pushed for conservation of snow leopards at an interaction organised by the Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA) Saturday.

According to conservationist Keshav Varma, the snow leopard is an “indicator species”.

Snow leopards are only limited to high altitude mountains, that is there only habitat, snow leopard helps us to indicate the health of the mountains. Hence, they are called the thermometer of the mountains,” Sharma said.

A January 2024 survey has estimated 718 snow leopards in India, most of which are in Ladakh.
