Following the midday meal tragedy in Bihar,Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) had decided to start a laboratory to put the food prepared in government schools through a scientific test. The laboratory,scheduled to be operational in two months,will test food given to 1.85 lakh students of municipal schools and anganwadis. SMC Deputy Commissioner Sharad Mehta said,The laboratory will be set up at Magob. The quality of food will be checked on a daily basis.
There are 293 primary schools in the city run by SMC,where over 1.45 lakh students were enrolled. In June 2012,the SMC gave the contract of midday meal to an NGO,Akshay Patra Foundation,after state governments permission.
