The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has got lukewarm response in implementing the impact fee rule to regularise the illegal constructions in the city. Out of approximately 2 lakh illegal structures, only 5,200 applications have been accepted so far. Local BJP leaders had started an awareness drive through social networking site to increase applications.

The new impact fee law was amended last year with a reduced fee structure to attract people to pay for keeping the illegal structures. Sources said that Surat had approximately over 2 lakh illegal constructions spread in different areas, including the newly-added areas in the city. The deadline for impact fee collection was February 19,but with lukewarm response, the deadline has been extended till August.

The BJP party workers and corporators are also working hard to create awareness among the people in different areas in Surat to regularise their illegal structures which will also generate revenue for the corporation. Hoardings and banners were put up at different places and even pamphlets had been distributed to the people.

SMC Town Development Officer Manish Doctor said,“We have received 2,5073 applications till now for impact fee registrations. Out of this,232 applications were rejected due to various reasons while 5,761 applications had been accepted and the SMC had earned Rs 14.65 crore from it. The response from the people has been slow.”
