Several shops on the ground floor of the Vrajeshwari complex near Viratnagar crossroads in Ahmedabad were destroyed after a fire, fuelled by motor oil, ravaged the building on Tuesday morning.
The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) received the call at 9.58 am. Firefighting teams from multiple stations reached the spot, and the blaze was brought under control by around 12.30 pm. There were no casualties, though traffic along the road was disrupted.
A total of 16 firefighting vehicles and 60 firefighters were deployed in the operation.
“There were about 2,000 litres of motor oil in the storage area and basement of the complex. There was a lot of grease as well, which all caught fire. We are still investigating the cause of the fire, whether it was auto-ignition or an electrical fault. The workshop was closed at the time,” said Chief Fire Officer Amit Dongre.
The fire then spread to cotton processing workshops on the first floor, he added. A total of 12 shops on the ground floor were gutted, and four workshops on the first floor were affected.
The AFES used two lakh litres of water and 500 litres of foam to douse the blaze.
