One of the four juveniles who allegedly sodomised a minor at an observation home here had turned adult at the time of the offence, said police who secured his three-day custody on Monday.
The 18-year-old who was lodged in the observation home for boys after he and three others allegedly stabbed to death a police constable on March 4.
“The boy had completed 18 years when he allegedly sodomised and beat a fellow inmate at the observation home. Therefore, we produced him in a local court on Monday and the court has sent him on police remand till Wednesday,” said A Division police inspector Keval Raval.
According to police, a 14-year-old from Jamnagar was sodomised allegedly by the four boys on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday at the observation home on Gondal Road here. They allegedly also beat four inmates with polymer pipes and two of the accused forced others to perform oral sex.
They also filmed the victims naked, said police. Jahid Kadri, the peon who was on duty when the incident took place at the observation home, has been arrested. Presently, he is in judicial custody.
The matter came to light when one of the inmates fled the observation home and narrated the incident to his parents.
While, police detained two accused, including a 17-year-old, following approval from the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), they were waiting for the JJB’s nod to detain the rest. The 17-year-old has been sent back to the observation home.
Social defence officer of Rajkot Kanaksinh Zala said that there were 17 juveniles at the Observation Home when the incident took place. The victims and the assailants were kept in a group of “aggressive, repeat-offenders” inside the home, he said.
A team of State Reserve Police has been posted at the observation home since Friday to prevent any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, Shruti Maniyar, in-charge superintendent of the observation home, was relieved of her charge on Sunday after the alleged sexual assault on the 14-year-old. “Maniyar was relieved of the additional charge she was holding as the superintendent of the observation home on Sunday, and Milan Pandit, a probationer, has replaced her. The action was taken after the alleged sexual assault on a juvenile by fellow-inmates. However, she will continue to hold charge of home for visually and physically challenged children in the city.
