A Surat court on Thursday rejected the bail plea of two Patidar agitation leaders — Vipul Desai and Chirag Desai — who are facing charges of sedition.
Vipul and Chirag were arrested on January 9 after their names cropped up during the investigation into the sedition case filed against quota stir leader Hardik Patel by Surat police. After the district principal and session judge rejected their bail plea, the defence lawyer said the two would soon move the Gujarat High Court.
Surat police had arrested Hardik on the charges of sedition on October 19 last year. During the investigation, Surat police had added three more names to the complaint — Vipul, Chirag and Alpesh Katheriya (Surat PAAS co-convener). Vipul and Chirag are currently in judicial custody, while Alpesh Katheriya has gone “underground” to evade arrest.
After going through the arguments from both sides — defence and prosecution, Surat district principal and session judge Geetaben Gopi on Thursday rejected the bail pleas of Vipul and Chirag.
Defence lawyer Y B Wala said, “The reason which court had mentioned rejecting the bail application are that both the accused might tamper with the evidence and even try to weaken the witnesses. The investigation into the case is still going on and even the chargesheet has not been submitted with the court. We have also told police that the mental status of Vipul is not good as he is undergoing treatment from a psychiatric doctor, but our arguments were not taken into consideration by court. We will talk to the family members of both the Patidar youths and will later file bail application with Gujarat HC.”
District government pleader Nayan Sukhadwala said, “We welcome the decision taken by the district principal and session judge… The mental status of Vipul Desai is alright. He had also attended the Patidar meeting at GMDC Ground in August last year, and came closer to Hardik Patel. Even in Surat Patidar rally, he had participated. He is also an active member of Surat PAAS team.”
