With hardly two days left for All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Rahul Gandhi’s arrival at M S University (MSU),the Special Protection Group (SPG) officials held a meeting with senior Congress leaders and top Vadodara Police officers on Wednesday morning.
MSU Senate member Narendra Ravat, who is coordinating Rahuls visit to the university campus, had sent an application to the MSU Vice-Chancellor Prof Ramesh Goyal to take his permission for the visit.
Sources at MSU said the university Registrar A V Gupta had quizzed the SPG asking them that in what capacity they were checking the security arrangements.
While the issue was hushed up,senior police officers who accompanied SPG said they had very limited time to follow the code of conduct. The police officers further informed, the SPG of Z-plus security order was given the mandate and it had to follow it in a short time.
Meanwhile,Prof Goyal said,”It is a privilege that Rahul wants to meet me.”
“Senior Congress leaders have shown their interest in booking the Convocation Ground informally. Senate member Ravat has sent a single line application to me seeking permission for Gandhi’s visit to MSU campus,” said Goyal.
He said,”The varsity will look into the matter as the Convocation Ground is not given for any political purpose.”
Ravat, said,”I have written to Prof Goyal about Rahul’s visit. Rahul will not meet the university’s Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor as a politician.”
He said there will be no display of political banners in the varsity head office, when Gandhi meets authorities. “Gandhi may probably meet students at the Convocation ground,” said Ravat.
Giving details about the meeting held with SPG,Ravat said,”As a part of its security drill, the SPG met senior police officers and Congress leaders.”
“Probably,Rahul will meet University authorities and visit Gandhinagar Gruh,Lal Bahadur Shastri School and Sardar Patel Statue at Sayajigunj,” he said.
