A 42-year-old principal of a municipal school committed suicide near Edhan village in Palsana taluka of Surat district on Thursday. Family members of the deceased,Kailash Sejwad,have alleged that police harassment drove him to suicide.
Sejwad,who worked in Surat Municipal School number 239 at Varachha area,had visited Dindoli police station in the morning after being summoned by police to sort out an old land dispute,family members said.
After visiting the police station,Sejwad returned home and later left for some work. When he failed to return home,his family members tried to contact him on his mobile,which was switched off. They then informed the Dindoli police.
Meanwhile,the police got information about a dead body lying on the roadside at Edhan village,about 20 kilometres from the city. Upon frisking it,they found Sejwads identity card.
The body was later sent for postmortem. Dindoli police inspector K M Rawal said,We had called him to our police station for questioning in a case relating to a property dispute. We have not harassed him. We also do not know why he took the drastic step.
