In a suspected case of poisoning of mid-day meal,a seven-year-old girl has died here while nine other children have been hospitalised after they complained of vomiting and other health problems,a senior civic official said.
All the children were students of a municipal school in Asarwa,sources said. The cause of the girl’s death was not yet known and officials said they were trying to ascertain whether it was because of food-poisoning or a water-borne disease. The deceased girl has been identified as Puja Patel.
Authorities have collected the food samples distributed as part of the mid-day meal scheme,water samples from the school tank as well as from the chawl,Ganga Girini Chali,where the children lived.Whether the children complained of health problems after consuming food or water would be ascertained once the test results were out,the official said.
Meanwhile,Municipal School Board chairman Jagdish Bhavsar dismissed allegations by the Opposition in the civic body that the girl who died had fallen sick after consuming mid-day meal.
The sick students were brought to the Civil Hospital on Monday night, said Dr M M Prabhakar,medical superintendent of the hospital. They all are out of danger now and their treatment is going on, he said.
Prabhakar,however,refused to say whether or not Puja was brought to the hospital.
