A local court in Surat on Saturday remanded a close aide of Narayan Sai,son of Asaram,in three-day police custody in connection with the alleged rape case against the self-styled godman and his son.

The 28-year-old man, identified as Mohit Bhojwani,is originally from Jaipur,Rajasthan. He was arrested by Surat police on Friday afternoon from Athwalines area of the city.

According to the police,Bhojwani works as an accountant in the Asaram Bapu Ashram at Jehangirpura and is said to be a close aide of his son Sai.

Two sisters from Surat city had registered a complaint of rape against Asaram and Sai.

Sai had filed anticipatory bail application before the Surat district court, while another petition was filed with the Gujarat High Court for quashing the complaint. Both the applications are still pending.

Sources said that during investigation, the police have kept the mobile phone numbers of Narayan Sai and others under scanner.

Acting on a tip-off,the police had picked up Bhojwani under suspicion from nearby Lal Bungalow area and after questioning him,the police found that he is a disciple of Sai.

On Saturday afternoon,Bhojwani was produced before the Surat District Chief Court for obtaining remand of 14 days. But the court granted remand up to October 15.

In the remand application, police mentioned that a mobile phone had been recovered from Bhojwani, containing several obscene clippings and images. The police have also found several WhatsApp messages sent to different disciples after the arrest of Asaram, provoking disciples to get more violent with their demonstrations against the arrest.

The police also claimed that Sai had carried out a meeting with Bhojwani before going underground.
