Sadiq Jamal encounter: CBI names 4 Mumbai cops

The report will translate into a supplementary chargesheet once cleared by the agency’s senior officers,said an officer.

At present,Sawant is Deputy Commissioner of Police with Maharashtra ATS,while Nayak is a Sub-Inspector posted at police control room (West region). Gawde is Assistant Police Inspector attached with Mumbai Crime Branch,and Sharma,who was recently exonerated in the encounter case of Ram Narayan Gupta alias Lakhan Bhaiya in Mumbai,is under suspension.

According to Gujarat Police,Sadiq was shot in Naroda area of Ahmedabad on January 13,2003,by a Crime Branch team of Ahmedabad,following intelligence inputs that he wanted to kill Chief Minister Narendra Modi and other senior BJP and VHP leaders.

“In a joint operation,Jamal was picked up by the Crime Intelligence Unit of Andheri under the custody of the (then) police inspector Pradeep Sharma,” a CBI officer said.

“Our investigation shows that the (four) officers had played a role in Jamal’s detention. Evidence show they were aware of Jamal’s movement and the purpose of sending him to Gujarat,” said a CBI officer.

“All the four have claimed they were acting on the orders of Intelligence Bureau,” said the officer.
