The CBI,which is probing the Sadiq Jamal encounter case,on Saturday questioned IPS officer Girish Singhal at its Gandhinagar office for nearly five hours.
Singhal, who was recently transferred in the states Intelligence Bureau as deputy commissioner (intelligence),was questioned for the first time in the case. He was an assistant commissioner of police at the Ahmedabads Detection of Crime Branch which shot Sadiq Jamal near Galaxy Cinema in Naroda area of the city on January 13,2003.
The CBI reportedly questioned Singhal on the summary report he had filed in the case in 2003 as supervising officer of the probe that was carried out by the then police inspector H P Agravat.
Singhal had based his report on the FIR filed by the Gujarat Police in January 2003 by the then inspector J G Parmar, which said Sadiq had connections with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and had come under the influence of terrorist outfits after the post-Godhra riots of 2002.
According to CBI sources,Singhal was also asked about the intelligence input received before Sadiqs encounter that claimed he was a Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorist who was on a mission to kill Chief Minister Narendra Modi.
On September 25,the CBI had arrested DSP Tarun Barot in the case.
Both Singhal and Barot are also prime suspects in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case.
