A row has erupted over the choice of venue for Holi celebrations planned by north Indians for Sunday in which Chief Minister Narendra Modi has been invited as the chief guest.
Local BJP functionaries, who are organising Uttar Bhartiya Holi Sammelan, have chosen at Nilgiri ground in Limbayat as the venue. However, there is a running ownership dispute over the plot between one Bhagubhai Patel and the Western Railway and the matter is pending at the Gujarat High Court.
While BJP workers have already decked up the venue with banners and pamphlets after securing a letter of permission from Patel,WR officials from Mumbai landed in Surat on Saturday after being informed by their area regional manager in Surat,R C Meena.
Sources said they met Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana and conveyed their objections.
Dayashanker Singh,a BJP councillor and the partys leader in the Surat Municipal Corporation who is the man behind the entire show, said the issue was resolved later.
Asthana said the permission to hold the celebration was given earlier. But since there has been an objection,we are looking into the legal angle.
