RMC corporators raise their discretionary LAD grants to Rs 20 lakh

(Express Photo) The corporators of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) Monday voted in favour of hiking their annual discretionary grant from Rs 15 lakh to Rs 20 lakh while also approving a proposal to make city bus service free for senior citizens, differently abled passengers, and those who are thalassaemic and juvenile diabetic.
At a special meeting, the BJP-dominated general board, approved the civic body’s Rs 2,843 crore budget for 2024-25 with Standing Committee Chairman Jaymin Thakar saying the budget was approved unanimously.
The budget proposed the raise in grant. As a result, a corporator will be able to direct the administrative wing of the RMC to undertake projects worth Rs 20 lakh in a year in his or her election ward.
Similarly, the corporators also approved a proposal to increase the city mayor’s development grant amount from the existing Rs 6 lakh to Rs 8 lakh and those of the deputy mayor, standing committee chairman and leader of opposition Rs 4.5 lakh to Rs 6 lakh each.
“We had received representations from corporators that the annual development grant of Rs15 lakh was insufficient due to the increased size of the wards and general price rise. Therefore, we had proposed to increase the grant to Rs 20 lakh and the general board approved it,” said Thakar.
