Remains of an ancient temple were recovered at the Sir Sayajirao General hospital premises during the excavation today,which was carried out for the construction of a new building at the place by the state Public Works Department.
The remains,including pillars and parts of ceiling,believed to be of 12th or 13th century AD,have been recovered. Dr Ambika Patel of the Department of Archaeology,M S University said,“The fragments seem to be of 12th or 13th century Solanki temple. The carvings on the pillars and the structure look ancient.”
This is for the second time that such an ancient structure has been found in the SSG hospital premises. Earlier,some ancient coins and articles were also found during the excavation at the place. The officials of Archaeology Survey of India (ASI) couldn’t be contacted for their comments on the findings. What lies beneath the structure is still not known. The medical superintendent of the hospital was also not available for his comments.
The department officials are required to inform the ASI about this after which they will be able to excavate further. As the news about the findings of the remains of an ancient temple at the hospital premises spread,several doctors and nurses gathered at the place.
