A four-day special placement drive organised by the Gujarat government’s Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) for Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) that concluded Thursday, has resulted in the selection of 225 degree-engineering students from government technical institutes, the state government said in an official release Wednesday. The drive is part of the Gujarat government’s initiative to “provide job opportunities” to students graduating from its colleges, and to “help build a local workforce” in industries based in the state, an official said.

Beginning with RIL, “which responded first”, according to an official, the first such drive was held at LD College of Engineering in Ahmedabad from December 1 to 4, was aimed at offering employment opportunities to degree and diploma engineering students graduating in 2025 from government technical institutes, as per their skills and qualifications.

According to a release that quoted Higher and Technical education minister Pradyuman Vaja, students from 47 government technical institutes took part. Around 3,800 students had registered on RIL’s portal, of which 608 degree-engineering and 728 diploma-engineering students were shortlisted through an online test. Vaja could not be reached for comment.

Of the 478 degree-engineering students who appeared for interviews, 225 were selected. Interviews for diploma-engineering candidates are currently underway, the release said.

The government also said that placement cells have been set up in all degree and diploma engineering colleges under the Technical Education department to link students with companies based on their interests and skill sets.

A senior officer from the department said that while companies routinely conduct campus interviews at colleges and universities, this is possibly the first time the government itself has organised a dedicated placement drive for a single company.

A top official in the government connected with the development said that the objective of the initiative is to bring reputed private companies to come to government engineering colleges and hire students from these government institutes.

“Generally, the private companies hold campus interviews in very few government institutes. Our point is that there are good students in other government institutes as well in the state. We are reaching out to private companies to hold such placement drives for students of government institutes. We are assuring them of the logistics free of cost. RIL has responded first, so we have organised the drive for them. We want to ensure that the students are benefited by this and get good employment,” said the official, indicating that more such drives will follow.

The official also added that the move is also aiming at a larger objective of having a local workforce in industries situated in Gujarat.
“Currently, the industrial workforce in Gujarat is majority from outside Gujarat. We want the industries in Gujarat to have Gujarati workforce. And our efforts are on to ensure that,” said the official.
