The campaign by BJP rebels led by former chief minister Keshubhai Patel against Chief Minister Narendra Modi has now turned into a full-scale attack on top BJP leaders, with dissidents now shedding their earlier restraint.
In the beginning, the rebels trained their fire only on Modi, sending across the message that they had little problem with the party. For the same reason,be it Keshubhai or former union textile minister Kashiram Rana and BJP MLA from Mahuva Dr Kanu Kalsaria, none has formally left the the BJP,though they have announced they would either merge with MJP or float a new party in August.
Things,however,have begun to change.
At his public meet in Jamnagar on July 20,the fourth in his parivartan series that began on July 10,Keshubhai called BJP veteran L K Advani and former BJP president Venkaiah Naidu liars. Not only Modi, even Advani and Naidu are liars. They had promised me to remove Modi in 2007,but they did not keep their promise, he had said.
In Vadodara on July 22,the ex-CM,who is one of the founding members of Jansangh and BJP,said it was not the real BJP but its ghost that was running the Gujarat government.
MJP president Gordhan Zadaphia and former textile minister Kashiram Rana are also not mincing words while attacking top BJP leaders, something they had not done openly so far. Ram Rath yatra started from Somnath to construct temple at Ayodhya. But Advani instead directed it towards Karachi, Zadaphia said in Rajkot on July 18.
The former minister of state (home) in the Modi government also attacked the central BJP leadership over the choice of vice-presidential candidate. The BJP has chosen Jaswant Singh, who in his book criticised Sardar Patel and praised Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Rana, while projecting Keshubhai as their CM candidate, claimed they were the real BJP.
Keshubhais open attack on the BJP leadership comes after his recent visit to Delhi during which he failed to convince top party leaders to remove Modi as the CM. I had recently gone to Delhi with a 20-page representation. I made it clear to the central leadership that situation in the state at present is like emergency, but in vain, Keshubhai said at Jamnagar.
