A man accused of rape gave police the slip while being escorted out from a local hospital in Surat after a medical examination.

An FIR has been also been lodged against the assistant sub-inspector who chose to take the accused in an auto-rickshaw from the hospital.

Chitan Saudagar (21),accused of raping a 14-year-old-girl,was taken to SMIMER hospital for medical examination on Sunday evening. A team of four policeman,including ASI Magan Singha,had escorted him,police sources said.

On reaching the hospital,the ASI asked other policemen to return to the police station as the hospital was witnessing a “heavy rush of patients”.

They were asked to return in the police van in which they had come.

After the medical examination,the ASI hired an auto-rickshaw from outside the hospital and returned to Kapodara police station with the accused.

On reaching the police station,the accused made a dash after pushing the 50-year-old ASI who was busy paying the auto fare. Some of the policemen near the police station tried to chase the accused,but he managed to flee.

The ASI has been booked for negligence on duty.
