Facing financial distress, a farmer died by suicide in Rajkot district Saturday, police said. The deceased has been identified as Jesingbhai Makwana, 45, a resident of Sardhar village, about 30 km from Rajkot city.
The Aji Dam police station has registered a case of accidental death in the matter.
The family of the deceased claimed that Makwana was upset for the past few days due to crop failure, adding his condition started deteriorating after he consumed a poisonous substance. He was taken to a private hospital from where he was referred to the Rajkot Civil Hospital where he was declared ‘brought dead’.
Makwana’s elder brother Babubhai said, “We were three brothers. Jesing farmed a two-acre plot owned by the family while my other brother and I work as labourers. Jesing had cultivated groundnut and coriander in the plot. He had suffered losses on two occasions earlier too (due to excess unseasonal rain). He again suffered crop loss due to the recent excess rain. He had been restless for the past few days.”

Digpalsinh Jadeja, Head Constable, Aji Dam Police Station, ruled out crop failure as the reason for the suicide. Jadeja said, “He has died by suicide due to financial distress and not due to crop failure.”
Makwana is survived by his wife and two sons.
