Demanding a special meeting of general board of Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC), opposition Congress gheraoed office of city mayor Jayman Upadhyay on Monday. But the mayor said situation did not warrant such a meeting.
The Congress protest started during question hour at the trimonthly general board meeting early in the morning. While the municipal commissioner was replying to a question asked by a BJP corporator about the door-to-door garbage collection service, opposition corporators created a ruckus and demanded time for asking questions over drinking water scenario in the city. Leader of Opposition, Vashram Sagathiya requested mayor, who was presiding over the meeting, to extend the meeting hour. But it was rejected. This intensified Congress protests.
Eventually, the mayor declared the meeting over after about 45 minutes during which only one question could be replied to.
However, Congress corporators, led by Sagathiya staged dharna outside the chamber of mayor and raised slogans against the ruling BJP and Water Supply Minister Vijay Rupani.
“They wanted to avoid tough questions over drinking water and therefore continued to harp on the service of garbage collection for 45 minutes. I requested the mayor to extend the meeting session but he refused. Therefore, we chased the mayor to his chamber and demanded a special meeting of the general board since Ward 10, 11, 13 and 18 are not getting water regularly. But he remained unmoved even after our dharna,” said Sagathiya.
