CONGRESS MLA from Rajkot (East) Indranil Rajyaguru and 24 party workers were detained after they threatened to demonstrate in front of the residence of CM Vijay Rupani during his visit to the city Wednesday. Rajyaguru was taken into preventive custody from his office on Race Course at around 4.30 pm, police said. Along with the MLA, 24 of his supporters and Congress workers were also detained. Police said that four of those detained were women. All the detainees were taken to the headquarters of city police.
The detentions came after the MLA alleged that the state government was “shielding” a few private schools which are functioning in Rajkot without due approvals and that he will protest in front of Rupani’s residence. “We met the district collector to inquire what action he had taken. But, we are disappointed with his answer,” Rajyaguru told mediapersons outside collector office.
“We apprehended that the MLA could hold demonstration at the residence of the CM or at the venues of functions he is to attend in the city today. Therefore, he and his supporters were detained as a preventive measure. The four women have already been released. The MLA and the other Congress workers will also be released after the the CM leaves the city,” Pradhyman Nagar police inspector RY Raval, who was part of the police team which detained the MLA said. CM Rupani was in Rajkot to attend a function organised by an educational institute and also attend marriage ceremony of BJP corporator Bina Acharya’s daughter.
