Rajkot civic body to recruit 532 casual sanitation workers after three decades
The RMC Saturday advertised 532 vacancies for part-time Rojamdar Safai Kamdar (RSK) or casual sanitation workers.
The window for applying for the job will open on Aug 21. The Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC), after almost three decades, will recruit 532 sanitation workers to increase its manpower. The decision comes amid contractual sanitation workers seeking regularisation of services.
The RMC Saturday advertised 532 vacancies for part-time Rojamdar Safai Kamdar (RSK) or casual sanitation workers. The window for applying for the job will open on August 21 and close on September 13. According to the advertisement, the part-time sanitation workers will be paid minimum wages fixed by the government from time to time.
RMC environment engineer Nilesh Parmar said, “We are recruiting sanitation workers for the first time in around 30 years as city limits have expanded and we need more manpower to keep the city clean. We also want to reduce our dependence on sanitation workers engaged through outsourcing agencies.”
As of now, the RMC has 4,900 sanitation workers, including 2,200 regular staff and 2,700 engaged through outsourcing agencies. “We are recruiting part-time casual sanitation workers for carrying out sweeping and cleaning operations from 6:30 am to 10:30 am. As the RMC is recruiting these casual sanitation workers, they will be eligible to get minimum wages. Since they will be part-time employees, they will get half of the present minimum wage which is Rs 487,” Parmar said.
He said that the RMC presently has around 10 casual sanitation workers.
“The financial burden on the RMC in terms of salary expenses of regular sanitation workers is almost thrice compared to the amount paid to the sanitation workers engaged through outsourcing agencies. So, having regular sanitation workers entails more financial burden on the RMC but it is always good to have its own staff rather than depend on contractors,” Parmar said.
The part-time casual labourers will be eligible for regularisation of their services on completion of 1,800 days of work, he said. At entry level, regular sanitation workers get a monthly salary of around Rs18000.
According to the advertisement, candidates whose family has been residing in Rajkot for past 20 years will be eligible to apply for part-time casual sanitation worker’s post. Candidates whose grandparents or parents have served as regular sanitation workers in the RMC will be eligible to apply. The third eligibility criterion is that an applicant’s spouse or children should not be employees of government, semi-government/public sector undertakings. The age limit is 18 to 45 years.
